Hi, I just stumbled across here and saw some people were looking for a recommendation.

I used to run a game hosting server, and for bandwidth monitoring, I used vnStat.

Using vnStat, you use the command line which gives you a “bar graph” and numbers of hourly / daily / monthly / yearly usage.

Theres also a PHP front end for it which can be set with a cronjob to dump data to the script and view it via a PHP/apache enabled computer.

I’m sure other programs are good too, but I’ve personally used vnState without any problems.

I am looking for the best solution for managing the FAP (Fair Access Policy) bandwidth limits imposed on Hughes Net and other satellite Internet users. I have only been involved technically with computers since 1977 and am new to Ubuntu so if someone could please provide a geek to English translation of the above and suggest which of these will do what I want to do in Ubuntu (and also in other operating systems so I can share that info with others in the same boat) I would be eternally grateful.

Basically, those limited by FAP need a way to specify how much bandwidth they are allowed over what length of time and ideally an early warning alarm option to ensure they don't exceed that limit. (The penalty at HughesNet is no Internet access for 24 hours! - really tough on those who work online.)

If you have any other tips for living under FAP restrictions please drop by my new blog and share them. Thanks.
