I've been using LAMP servers for three years. LAMP is an environment that enables you to build (program) dynamic web sites using html, php and MySql. The best open source projects are at sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net. My favorite LAMP open source projects are phpBB, egroupware, postnuke (postnuke.com). There are lots out there. Play around and have fun!

Yes, i agree. I have installed the LAMP setup, with the tutorial - but now what.

I expected to be presented with configuration options, so that i could begin to use the LAMP setup to start web developing.

I am a noobie, so where are all the LAMP Config/Usage Tutorials???

Thanks for howto. Now I have a LAMP server... Now what? Can you give any 'next step' advice? Or point to some of your favorite LAMP application howtos?

Thanks,
David

Hello,
I have installed the server version of ubuntu 6.06. I wanted to have a light desktop manager, so I decided to " sudo apt-get xubuntu-desktop". It installed the xfce stuff but the desktop never showed up! During boot, the xubuntu logo is shown, then some weired colors and lines show up, disapear again and everything simply freezes and stalls. The monitor shows the xubuntu logo with a line of weired small items and thats it. It seemd to me that the video driver or the screen is not suported, so I did "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and selected a lower resolution and color depth. It didn't wok. Then I thought, ok I can remove the GUI and go back to the plain server version, so I did "sudo apt-get remove xubuntu-desktop". But it didn't help either. The machine did exactly the same and stopped at the same stage during boot. I thought maybe the xfce is not stable or so, so I installed the server over again and this time I did "sudo apt-get xubuntu-desktop" to get the gnome desktop. I have exactly the same problem as before. The funny thing is that I have installed ubuntu 6.06 and kubuntu 6.06 on the same machine without any problem. I could run a graphic resolution at "1024x768". I wonder why the gnome or KDE desktops can't be installed on my machine, when I start with a server installation. So far it has taken me more than 8 hours and it still doesn't work.

You could also do "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-lamp" to get the lamp packages installed on the server without having to redo everything, but it's questionable as it will take about 15 minutes to do it from scratch. :)

Oh great. Finally an answer that i thought made sense but not having done this before I was not sure. Reading over your instructions it seems that I can do this by just booting up with the install disc then following your screenshots and text to the t...correct? Thank you for your help with this. !!I'm sure I chose DNS server with my initial install by the way. I had nothing on the server before I started so wiping it clean would not be a problem either if you think its a prefered way to go.

from my point of view you need to install again to choose lamp option otherwise you need to install apache2,mysql with php support separately.
