Problem

After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 you might not get the sound from your Sound Blaster Audigy sound card.

Solution

Install GNOME Alsa Mixer

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

or

Click on the following link

apt://gnome-alsamixer

Now open GNOME ALSA Mixer from Applications -> Sound & Video -> GNOME ALSA Mixer

Choose the tab: “SigmaTel…”

Turn on “Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack”

That’s it now your sound should work as normal

I had this problem like 2 years ago. I ended up recompiling alsa, then someone posted the same fix as you but using the Sound control window and going to the “Switched” tab.

Turn on “Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack”

    should read

Turn OFF “Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack”

(i.e. make sure its checkbox isn’t checked).

I did all the steps, but the very last one I couldn’t do it, because I do not have this option:
    “Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack”
my case was rather strange, I did the upgrade and the sounds was working just fine (no mic tho), and yesterday while I was listening music, the sound suddenly stopped, so I do not know, what my situation could be.

    hi,
i have the same problem on an eeepc 901 - no sound at all. at the begining it worked but only with the local speakers, no output line. i tried the suggestions in the forum but couldn’t make it work. when i start the gnome alsa mixer i get an empty window and when i try to access the ’sound card properties’ from the edit menu the application crashes immediately .. any idea on that one.
    thanks,
    andrei
