Hi!

I struggled to make Java work in Opera 11.51 under Ubuntu 11.04.

Though pointing Opera to the Mozilla-plugin folder, as well as copying the content of that into the Opera/plugins folder, nothing worked.

Eventually I learned that Opera does not support the IcedTea-plugin or any of the other commonly used Java-plugins.

So... I installed JRE (through Synaptic), sun-java6-jre, and told Opera to look in the folder for the plugin (Opera => Settings => Preferences => Advanced => Content => Plugin options => Change path => Add => /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26

Voila. Now everything that uses Java runs NQA...

Thanks for this "how-to". I was able to install Opera and flash. Following the line command for Java plug-in, "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin ubuntu-restricted-extras," my terminal displays the Java disclosures and then it just sits there. I couldn't go forward or backward. What should I do now? I can't even get to my Synaptic Package Manager because the system is locked due to another process is currently running (Java plug-in.) Please help! (SOS, please)

Thanks

You should use repositories and install through the package manager, rather than directly get the .deb file. I used this method and ended up with Opera complaining bitterly everytime I tried to open email, it had no root SSL certificates installed, so the security was basically entirely asking me to verify and accept every certificate!

I would NOT install java6 in multiverse - instead, use openjdk and it's icedtea plugins. Much better and OPEN.

and why is opera not in ubuntu universe? Opera???

A better download for Ubuntu is the qt4 version, found here: ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/1000/final/en/i386/

With this version of Opera your fonts are better looking, and you can go to Tools>Appearances>Color Scheme, and select use system color scheme. This will theme opera to your ubuntu theme.

Another good tip: install the gecko-mediaplayer. this installs gnome-mplayer, and you will have the best video playback. if flash and java are already installed on your system, opera will automatically find them.

cheers
