HowTo install Avant Window Navigator (AWN) in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Avant Window Navigator (Awn) is a dock-like bar which sits at the bottom of the screen. It has support for launchers, task lists, and third party applets. The Awn project is the development of the ‘dock', avant-window-navigator, and its corresponding shared library ‘libawn', which is used to develop applets.
Note :- The Avant Window Navigator depends on compiz before installing Avant Window Navigator you need to make sure you have desktop effects enabled and without this you should not go through the trouble of installing Avant Window Navigator.
Thanks to Marius for this
First you need to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file using the following command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
add the following two lines
For Hardy Users
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu hardy main
For Gutsy Users
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu gutsy main
For Feisty Users
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu feisty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu feisty main
Save and exit the file.
Update the source list using the following command
sudo aptitude update
Install Avant Window Navigator (AWN) in Ubuntu
sudo aptitude install avant-window-navigator-bzr awn-core-applets-bzr
This will complete the installation
You can now start AWN from Applications->Accessories->Avant Window Navigator
AWN Bar
Once it is running, you can right click on the bar that it opens up, and choose preferences to set all of the different things that you want AWN to handle
Hey!
It seems that the tux server (the user) is not available anymore. Do you have any other resources???
Great site btw!
Thx Markus
EDIT: the package is available in the backports! Just add this line to the sources.list
deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports restricted main multiverse universe
then proceed as written above.
I keep on getting ‘libpango’ errors each time I come to the final command:

How can I install it for hardy. My gedit shows this on awn. I installed it from some source and tick the box to start with login. but its not. Why ?
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main
When i type this command, wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/reacocard.asc, it says the 404 can’t be found. Is it a typo, or does it not exist anymore?
It doesnt exist anymore: http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/index.html
