Okay first things first you are going to need to download the newest version of Azureus and install the java runtime environment.
For Azureus/Vuze 32bit:
In the terminal:
wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/azureus/Vuze_4.0.0.4_linux.tar.bz2?download && tar xvjf Vuze_4.0.0.4_linux.tar.bz2 && sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin
For Azureus/Vuze 64bit:
In the terminal:
wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/azureus/Vuze_4.0.0.4_linux-x86_64.tar.bz2?download && tar xvjf Vuze_4.0.0.4_linux-x86_64.tar.bz2&& sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin
Next we are going to have to edit the azureus script in order to point it to the location we are going to move the core files to.
cd vuze
gedit azureus
Now find this line in the file:
#PROGRAM_DIR="/home/username/apps/azureus" # use full path to Azureus bin dir
and replace it with this:
PROGRAM_DIR="/usr/share/vuze"
Remember to remove the # or else it won't work. Now it is time to move everything where it needs to be. While still in the vuze directory in the terminal type:
sudo mv "azureus" "/usr/bin/azureus"
sudo mv "vuze" "/usr/bin/vuze"
cd ..
sudo mv "vuze" "/usr/share/vuze/"
That's it your done! Happy torrenting
Optional Steps:
Make it so Vuze can update itself now:
sudo chown -R 777 /usr/share/vuze
Add icon to applications menu:
Goto System->Main Menu->Internet->New Item
Type:Application
Name: Vuze
Command: vuze
In order to get the frog icon for it click the spring board looking icon on this dialog to the left.
Where it says browse type in /usr/share/vuze and wait a second for it to load. You should now see something called vuze.png. Click on it and hit okay and you are done!
Or just install Deluge and have something that even the windows guys wish they could run! 🙂
“sudo chown -R 777 /usr/share/vuze” should be “sudo chmod -R 777 /usr/share/vuze”
Hi
Now Azureus/ Vuze 4.1.0.2 is Released, I suppose it can be installed instead of 4.0.0.4.
Use the following command to download:
wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/azureus/Vuze_4.1.0.2_linux.tar.bz2?download && tar xvjf Vuze_4.1.0.2_linux.tar.bz2 && sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin
Rest of the commands remain the same. For changing the permissions use the corrected command given above i.e.
“sudo chmod -R 777 /usr/share/vuze”
nice tutorial it works new fan of ubuntugeek
not just for movies tv show on hd
i also use it for all torrent files to lol
You guys should give this one a try apt://deluge
Darn that didn’t work… Well you can install with one command.
sudo apt-get install deluge-torrent
I have tried Azureus in WinXp and Vuze in Ubuntu but from my opinion it’s a resource eater. Now i use Ktorrent and also Transmission and everything it’s fine.
Nevertheless great site and i have learned a lot from this web page!
Thanks!
bob@bob-laptop:~/vuze$ sudo mv “azureus” “/usr/bin/azureus”
mv: cannot stat `“azureus”’: No such file or directory
Hi there. Im really new with Ubuntu, but I have followed the turtorial several times now, with no luck. Every code and step works fine until I reach to “That’s it your done! Happy torrenting” 🙂
I did make an icon with the help of “main menu”. But when I click the icon nothing happens. At all.
Please help me out here. I really have no idea of what I should do to make it work! 🙂
Thanks in advance.
@caseper what happens why you type vuze into the terminal?
Hmm. It looks like I havent got java installed correctly.
It says:
nybroe@Nybroe:~$ vuze
Starting Azureus…
Java is GCJ.. looking for Sun Java..
Java exec not found in PATH, starting auto-search…
ls: kan ikke tilgĂĄ /usr/java/latest: No such file or directory
ls: kan ikke tilgĂĄ /usr/java: No such file or directory
ls: kan ikke tilgĂĄ /usr/lib/jvm/latest: No such file or directory
Java exec found in /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/
Java is GCJ.. looking for Sun Java..
But I have fooled around with java many times. I have read many forums of installing Sun Java, and it all went like they said in the forums.
Okay, so I looked into the Java-problem and I found out that I just had to update Java by using the code:
sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
So now I got vuze to start, but it wont update.. When I type
sudo chown -R 777 /usr/share/vuze
in the terminal nothing happens. (used a fresh terminal)
Shall I install Vuze all over now, or how do I get it to update?
Thanks in advance
so sad,,i don’t know why…

thanks a lot it worked fine for Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope .
I downloaded Vuze 4.2.0.2 and I used vi instead of gedit.
It also updated my plugins!
dave@dave-desktop:~$ sudo mv “azureus” “/usr/bin/azureus”

OK i did exactly what this says and azureus still won’t work. I’m having problems with it. Someone please help.
1. dave@dave-desktop:~$ sudo mv “vuze” “/usr/share/vuze/”
mv: cannot move “vuze” to “/usr/share/vuze/vuze/”:Directory not empty
and when i try to start azureus:
dave@dave-desktop:~$ azureus
Starting Azureus

You seem to have set an invalid PROGRAM_DIR, unable to continue!
Replaced in the rotation with Charlie Furbush, who I really don’t imagine will do any better.
