Unity users can easily monitor CPU and Memory usage by using indicator-sysmonitor application.This is very simple and helpful application
Install indicator-sysmonitor on ubuntu
open the terminal and run the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexeftimie/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-sysmonitor

Thanks for this entry, though it is a poor replacement of the graphical applet that we had before. Plus, actually *using* these in 11.04 is totally counter-intuitive. (I had to ask on irc to find out that one has to run the indicator like a regular app). But that’s the fault of Ubuntu itself. Bad move, imho.

Agree with the first poster, this is not as useful as the old graphical indicator we had in gnome.
I am sure however that someone will improve this and we will have a graphical tool.

Are the only commands it can take to display the CPU and memory? can it, e.g., show how much is being uploaded/downloaded over an Internet connection?

For me, acts the exact same in 12.04 as 11.10:
When I launch it after U’s booted, it works fine in all ways.
It still won’t load automatically when added to the list of startup apps, however.
