Thanks a million. I was able to install JRE and, consequently, Juniper Network Connect. Now I’m able to connect to my work’s via ssl vpn.

when i type in this
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts
it wont do, the terminal just closes. what can i do?

Hopskole,

You need to open a terminal (also called a Konsole ) and type in or copy and paste the command the author has written above:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

This will automatically install java for you.

Java Web Start will not start

Details: Failed to execute child process “/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.15/jre/bin/javaws” (No such file or directory)

ran java -version

samstone@samstone-laptop:~$ java -version
java version “1.6.0_20″
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing)

Preciate the advice you guys and gals are awesome!

p.s. karmic/gnome/acer netbook/dual atom processors

sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-bin sun-java6-fonts
sudo apt-get autoremove

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

p.s.s.s. followed advice from Shisoik says:

Just do:
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-plugin

It will automatically figure out the solution. In my case it was to downgrade from 6-16-0ubuntu1.9.04 to 6-15-1. It is in general better to use aptitude instead of apt-get.

I’m running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.6.2. I’ve followed these instructions and those on other sites, too. No good. I get…
java version “1.6.0_15″
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing)

So the right version is installed but no java plugin in Firefox.

Any clues? Is it a compatibility issue with 3.6.2?

Thanks for the info - I was having a heck of a time figuring out how to install Java and the java.com site sucks - and so does their stupid licensing in the terminal window

Hi , i don’t know if the way i did is the better way, but i just look for the package sun-java6-plugin in synaptic and it put a checkmark on the others packages deeded, and ta-daa!!, uploading photos to Facebook via Java may not work for everyone, i really dnot know ( i’m using ubuntu 9.10)

TYTYTYTYTYTYTY I have tried installing Java several times now, following instructions from one site or another, and while I did manage once or twice to get it installed, Firefox would not recognize that it was installed. Scraped it all one more time, and used the very simple instructions here, and works just fine! Makes me wonder why the instructions are so complicated on other sites…
