To SinisterTux:

Make sure you run the following:
1. sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/jaunty.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

(where you must replace ‘jaunty’ with the correct release name if you’re not using Ubuntu 9.04)

2. sudo apt-get update
3. sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring

Should work.

To sivakumar: commonly you get the locking error when you are trying to run apt-get in the command line while you have Synaptic Package Manager open.

Everything worked perfectly, until it came time to actually install the codecs… I got the first line in, and downloaded the list from medibuntu, but when I tried

sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring

it told me:

E: Couldn’t find package medibuntu-keyring

know what’s up?

That just means that apt is being run somewhere else. Probably Update Manager or Synaptic is open. That’s why you get that message.

If all else fails, reboot. You should be fine then.

hi this is kris i tried to install mplayer but i am not able to install it.when i use the command

Worked like charm.
Followed your guide in its minutia, step by step and finally I got my WMV9 CBT Linux Nuggets videos playing in SMPlayer… after 2 years on a Linux OS..arggghhh

However, there’s a delay when loading videos in Smplayer as compared to Dragon player(yes I’m a Kubuntu fan). But that’s fine with me.

Not only will I bookmark your guide, I’ll print it too.

Since my last post I switched from Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit to 64-bit and successfully installed all my needed codecs and players according to this guide.

What are your alternatives?

Why are the w32codecs/w64codecs still being recommended? I was quite certain they were all obsolete. WMV has been in ffmpeg for years and so has Quicktime. RealPlayer has a native codecs for Linux, and ffmpeg supports the format as well. Can anyone name a legitimate reason to install it?
