I added the jaunty repo (deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted) to my "Software Sources" then did 'sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.28-4-generic' Then I removed the jaunty repo and restarted. I'm now running the new kernel...so far so good. :)

I did what Robbie has explained, but looking at his reply with the sources there seems to be an error in the fact that both lines have restricted. One line should just be main. Once you add the sources you will find the new kernel is listed in Synaptic. I have since tarred up my home partition and converted it to ext4. It also is working what seems to be without issues so far. I did this by running mkfs.ext4 -j /dev/sdax from the intrepid live cd. Then I untarred the home back to the ext4 partition from the recovery root command line. I also had to change the fstab to reflect the home folder be mounted as ext4. Good luck

I just upgraded to the latest 2.6.28-4 kernel on Intrepid via adding the Jaunty repos temporarily. It worked perfectly.

deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted

You can install the new kernel very simply by adding the jaunty repositories in synaptic. I have no issues with doing it this way so far. If you get the kernel headers it will update libc6 too. I added the main and restricted Jaunty repositories temporarily in order to access the 2.6.28-4 kernel in synaptic. It would be nice if someone would come up with a tutorial for converting to ext4 and grub2.

From what I've read on other sites you have to compile this to get it on intrepid, won't be officially out until jaunty.
