Are you using a wireless connection? I have the same prob. If your server is a Windows system, remember this, Windows doesn't play nice with other operating systems and there's really nothing you can do about it. If you are using firefox, go to tools(dropdown)>>addons>> get addons and search for FireDownload. This download accelerator works pretty good for me. Also, UbuntuGeek, and UbuntuLand should be able to give you some good pointers. Remember - Windows is for the lazy, it's not called WinBLOWS for nothing!!!

Thanks for this post, like Mark, this has completely solved my problem. This is my first day with a Linux OS (Ubuntu with Xfce) and it's great. Thank you so much to everyone that's involved in this project, I'm never going back Micro$oft's slow, DRM-infected, bloated Windows.

Thank you for this post, the instructions at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-select-fastest-mirror-in-ubuntu.html completely solved the problem for me, my download alternately stalled or would take 2 more days. The same batch of updates now downloaded and installed in less than a minute.

I have just installed ubuntu 8.04.02 on a Dell E6400 laptop.
When I use the update manager or Synaptic package manager to retrieve files I am getting very slow transfer speeds. Typical speed is 40-60 K Bytes per second and sometime as slow as 4 K Bytes per second.

I can go the same site with a PC (on the same network) and can get over 700 K Bytes per second.
On the ubuntu system, if I use ftp from the command line, to the same site I get > 700K per second.

I am in the process (currently very slow) of downloading the latest updates.
Is there a specific update that would solve the slow performance with the gui download applications?
Or is there something else I need to do to fix this issue?

I follow the instruction to choose the best mirror.
However, the mirror suggested doesn't work.
Then I choose randomly some other mirrors.
Finally, I find one server that works wonderful ! (from around 1K/s to 100K/s)

root has a random password choosen at the time of installation of Ubuntu. And don't ask how to know the root password.,. its different for different installations. You need to change the root password from your account by getting to System > Administration > Users and Groups and then login to the root.

With great difficulty I managed to move from Gutsy to Hardy. However I am having some issues. The /etc/hosts file is showing the lkocal host as 127.0.0.1 - is this correct ?

how do I log into root ?

I was going to suggest the same thing as admin, your best bet is to switch mirrors, although that hasn't helped me much. I thought it was just Ubuntu's server's being overloaded by the Hardy release, but we're far enough past that now, I don't know what the deal is.
