Ubuntu 9.04 i.e Jaunty is the newest Ubuntu stable version and i am going to discuss here how to install ubuntu Jaunty desktop with step by step procedure.I hope this will help some ubuntu users to install ubuntu Jaunty in their machines, laptops, etc.

First thing is you need to download ubuntu jaunty .iso image from here once you have the .iso image you need to create a bootable CD from this and you need to boot your machine using this CD.

Once It starts booting from CD you should see similar to the following screen here select your language and press enter

Here you need to select "Install ubuntu" option and press enter

Ubuntu jaunty installation loading in progress

Select your language for ubuntu installation click on forward

Select your region and city.In this example i am using Europe region,London city and click on forward.

Select your keyboad layout in this example i am using united kingdom and click on forward

Now you can See the following screen with the disks available in your machine here you need to create partitions in this example you can see the 8GB of space for this installation here i am going create a single partition,if you want to create manually use the other option you need to click on forward.

Note:- this is only example partition. In your installation you have to choose specify partitions manually and swap partition should assigned

Next you need to create User name, password and computer name you can also choose if you want to login automatically or not

If you enter weak password you should see similar to the following screen

List of information available for installation here you need to click on install to start the installation.

If you want to see advanced option screen in the above step as follows

Partitions formatting in progress

Installing ubuntu jaunty system in progress

Installation Completed Succesfully and you need to restart the system by clicking “Restart Now”

Once it boots you should see similar to the following screen to login

Conclusion :- The ubuntu jaunty installation process was much improved compared to old versions and i hope first time users feel very easy to install.

I dont see any difference between the latest Ubuntu and the old installation procedures.

You need to add a warning in partitioning step, not to use entire disk for obvious reason.

Also it has to have “swap” partition screenshot.

why would anyone want to install edgy? if they want lts they can go for hardy.

    Little question,
I’ve Ubuntu 8.10 installed this way:
    ext3 partition /
    ext3 partition /home
    swap

If i install Ubu 9.04 avoiding formatting /home,
could i save all user programs settings, right?
So for example, when i reinstall thunderbird on 9.04, users can get their emails back…or not?

  4. Agyeya says:

    Reply to Jecko.

If you already have 8.10 as I had, you do not need to do a clean install of your OS. You can instead do an upgrade to 9.10.

This should maintain all user data as it is.

    @x33a

Thanks for your note i have updated the article with correct one

  6. Pe Bakk says:

@jecko: Easiest to upgrade as Agyeya said however you are correct in that /home will still retain all your old user data.
You’ll need to create “new” user accounts so the username matches the user folders in /home, as well. This way you should be able to log into their respective accounts and will see all their files right away.

  7. scroobious says:

@jecko: The above comments are all correct w/r/t your /home directory.

    However:
    – If you want to do a clean system install
    – And have your /home directory on its own partition
    – AND you want to keep ext3,

You can use the disk. When you get to the partitioning part, set the /home directory in the partitioner to point to your existing /home partition, and DON’T format it.

You can then choose the other / (root) partition and format that for the clean install. That will automatically recognize your /home partition as already there and formatted, and it’ll pull in your settings.

Know that any new applications you installed in 8.10 that weren’t in the original install won’t be there, but their menu directories will be there.

So say you had Deluge installed, and you just did the upgrade from disk as described above. You could click on Deluge in the Applications menu, but it’ll spit an error because Deluge doesn’t come with the basic installation. Do a sudo apt-get install deluge, and not only will it be back in place, but any settings you had for it will be configured — and you’ll be at the latest version available in Synaptic. Pretty slick.

why is it when I did everything right I install the product and at the screen where it says installing system it stays at 44% and then shows an error telling me I had a dirty DVD-RW or w/e why wont it work?

does anyone have a solution for that?

  9. truth says:

The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

    [Errno 5] Input/output error

This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

    this is the error

OK. I created a partition, unformatted, to use for Ubuntu. It gives me some funky development message or something, than goes into a “scanning disks” mode to go into partitioning … it gets to 50 percent and simply stalls out. How long does this / should this take? This is 9.04 I have from the Ubuntu site, 64-bit.

  12. Ivan Luís Kuhn says:

In some machines, when chose or run, or install, maybe necessary press F6, and in “other options” put “noapic”. In other way, without this, It’s not possible run the ubuntu.

It’s a bios problem. In mine ASUS M2N-X-Plus, it’s necessary

I installed 9.04 using the upgrade, all went well but at reboot, past the first screen with Ubunto and the line showing the loading in progress, I got a screen with 5 Ubuntu lined up and at the bottom of the screen a streaked rectangle white and light grey, system frozen. Are are the requirements for display different from previous version?

Similar to Truth above, I am getting the same error whilst installing and on exit it continues to start up the desktop. However, it seems to be running from the CD and not the Hdisk, based on the activity on CD Drive when selecting anything.

    Error:
The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

    [Errno 5] Input/output error

This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

  22. vishlaini says:

The installer needs to commit changes to partition tables, but cannot do so because partitions on the following mount points could not be unmounted:

    /cdrom

Please close any applications using these mount points.

Would you like the installer to try to unmount these partitions again?
