I used the update-manager -d command to upgrade to the beta version. In the terminal window it said:

WARNING: Failed to read mirror file

It then proceeded to go through the update process. I was presented with a list of items that would be removed an installed. Next it proceeded to continue the upgrade process. I was then presented with a list of software packages that would not longer be supported by Canonical Ltd. It then continued with the process. Then this popped up:

Error during commit
'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend openoffice.org-core for openoffice.org-filter-binfilter, probably a dependency problem' Restoring original system state

How can I upgrade? Thank you

I could not get my machine up in text-mode, as the screen went black in recovery/text mode boot.
I managed to login in xterm-mode from the graphical login screen and run 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get upgrade' commands.
I had to hook the laptop up on wired network before I got a connection.
Hope this helps someone else.

Problem is solved. Both taskbars are back after update via recovery mode.

Just put in terminal: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade.

Servers are getting pounded right now. Direct links to to the LiveCD Desktop torrents are here:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

Just click and wait a couple minutes, it will eventually download.

Gotta love how the more popular a link is for a server the harder it is to get, but the more popular a link is for bittorrent the faster it downloads...
