well flash video and such media players needs a lot of ram but i suppose its all about the software and the drivers
for some reason i know they can but they just dont want to be ahead of mac or windows for multimedia
linux can be a lot faster and efficent but as a free os i guess they just dont want make it happen

linux was known for fast operating and stable system
but these days its just a insufficent and slower copy of windows

the new ubuntu 9.04 64 bit works with ati 4850 but 32 bit seems not working somehow

i downloaded 8.10 32 bit but didnt also work with my 4850 ati very interesting but it worked with another 32 bit copy cd mailed to my adress i ordered from ubuntu.com

looks like each ubuntu copy also sometimes dont work with ati
and i consider to have nvidia 9800gt or something since nothing works with ati

bytheway when i watch video the screen flicks sometimes is that because of thepoor ati linux driver or is it ubuntu?

i also did a fresh install using the unetbootin usb method (alpha 5) and encountered no problems at all except for one blip with audio. just changed the audio device to IDT and all's well.
compix, wireless, hibernation all good.
heck og a lot of updates being installed but that's only natural.

@ Hund I'm using an older Radeon X600 with Jaunty using no proprietary drivers and I have no issues. rendering is fine, compiz zips right along and I'm pretty happy with this fresh 9.04 install.

I also have to confess that I prefer a completely fresh install. Nothing bad to say about the upgrade process shown in the blog, I just like to start fresh and see what, if anything, I have to tweak by hand again. I used a 1Gig usb key and unetbootin with the downloaded iso. Worked like a charm. I have to say, that the live cd on usb stick makes for a much nicer demonstration when trying to let someone see it for the first time.

@ Hund
Ati driver is not supported yet if i remember what i have read on ubuntu forun but should be with the final version.

9.04 so far so good, using 64bit and it runs smoothly with fast ext-4 with only small bug with sound for me easely fixed.
Regards.

How come the the Alpha 6 is the FIFTH release? Am I missing something?

Anyway, I found out by experience that late Alpha Releases, such as 5 or 6 are not that bad (unless it's a production system) if you don't mind some problems. You could also help the distro, fix a couple of issues if you report what you find.
