Install Ubuntu Installation Report Generator
Open your /etc/apt/sources.list file
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
add the following lines
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/irgenerator-developers/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/irgenerator-developers/ubuntu hardy main
Save and exit the file
Now you need to update the source list using the following command
sudo sudo apt-get update
Install using the following application
sudo apt-get install installation-report-generator
Using Application
You can open this application from System--->Administration--->Installation Report Generator.If you don't see just logout and login back.

Once it opens you should see similar to the following welcome screen click on forward

Enter your laptop details click on forward

Select your ubuntu version click on forward

Configuration summary click ok

Report generate completed click on forward

From my experience this need to be more polished for all types of hardware and more detailed report in clear format.Just give it a try hope you will get some information from this.

I don’t get the point of this, because there is already a tool, “Hardware Testing”, that reports hardware information.
And btw less terminal tinkering would be nice… even an apt: link for the lazy.
