Upgrade Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Beta

Note: This is still a beta release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in April 2008.

Upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 LTS Beta follow this procedure
Before you start Upgrading you need to know the following points
- This is still a beta release. Do not install it on production machines.
- You need to make sure you have complete backup of your machine
- Be sure that you have all updates applied to your current version of Ubuntu before you upgrade.
Now you need to Press Alt-F2 and type update-manager --devel-release Click on Run.If you want to install Ubuntu 8.04 stable version you need to type update-manage click on Run.
Starting Update Manager in Progress
Now you can see New Distribution release 8.04 is available for upgrade click on upgrade
This will show you Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Release notes click on upgrade
Now it will prompt for root password enter your root password click ok
Preparing for upgrade in progress
If you are using any third party sources in your /etc/apt/sources.list file it will be disabled at the time of upgrade process click close
If you have any unsupported libs installed in your machine you can see similar to the following screen click close
Starting the upgrade process window click on Start Upgrade
Downloading the new Packages in Progress
After downloading this will start the installation of packages if you have more than one display managers installed this will prompt you to choose your default display manager and click Forward

If you have installed any applications this will prompt for you to restart the services with new libs click forward
Cleaning Up process in Progress
You need to restart the system to complete the Upgrade by clicking “Restart Now”
Testing Your Upgrade
You can check the ubuntu version installed using the following command
sudo lsb_release -a

It might be a good idea to grab a copy of the install CD before you begin. My system refused to login after upgrade, being able to reinstall without internet was handy.
It also might be good to keep in mind that the Beta is not bug free, like the “production machine” warning says. As someone pointed out, since the Ubuntu releases are on a fixed cycle, they can be a bit of a rough ride.
I think the beta is definitely worth seeing though. Every release I am amazed by the number of things that improve from the last, both in style and in function. (In Gutsy I really fought to get wireless working, in Hardy it’s been up out of the box, sorta - nm-applet breaks from time to time, but there was no hunting down windows drivers and replacing the default linux drivers to connect to security enabled networks.)

It will break ndiswrapper too.. unless they have fixed it ve3ry recently, so be aware of that if you have need to use wifi that isnt supported in the kernel

i just upgrade to ubuntu 8.04 but the upgrade end withe error , it is stop at the end of the step” installing the upgrades” and don’t do the” cleaning ” and the” restart” so i restart it manuale and i have the upgrades !! i get it work but i know that there is some files some were that must deleted i tray to re install the upgrade withe the order “update-manager –devel-release” but it is not work now it say the the system is already update soo what to do ?? i want the upgrade to be really perfect

If you upgrade to a –dev-release, will you have to upgrade again (to a distribution release using -c) when Hardy is officially released?

on this day it does not seem to give me the option to upgrade… is it frozen?? i guess i can wait 10 days for the official release, but right now i kinda have nothing to do and wanted to try the upgrade…

After installing 8.04 I was able to log in, but…
When the initialization window opened up, Ubuntu 8.04 was not on the list of operating systems, and not selecting one of the choices allowed a default startup. That let me to log in, but I got a blank desktop and a moveable cursor.
I found one key PrtSC Sys Req to open up an image capture window, but I was unable to do anything, other than see that my now inaccessible files and folders still appeared to be listed.
I had to open a backup Ubuntu 7.10 2.6.22-14 which actually opened up an old version of Kubuntio I had on my hard drive.

I decided to try to install the new Ubuntu 8.04 rather than trying to update version 7.10.
I once again could not see where the new version was installed, and the only system I could access was an earlier version of Kubuntu.
