Book Title: Hacking Ubuntu by Neal Krawetz

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons

Brief Introduction

I started seriously using Linux in 1995. Back then, Slackware 3.0 was the popular distribution, but RedHat 2.1 and Debian 1.0 were gaining a following. Ah, the good old days of the 1.2.13 kernel…

Over the last decade, I have used Linux on all types of systems and platforms-from personal computers to mission-critical servers, and from Intel's 386 to PowerPC, SGI, and Sun platforms. I view the operating system as a tool, and the right job needs the right tool. Ten years ago, the flexible Linux system filled a niche that Microsoft, Sun, and other proprietary operating systems could not fill. It had all the power and programming hooks that a developer could want, but was seriously lacking in usability and support. Custom device drivers did not exist unless you built them, and compatibility with Microsoft Windows was limited to FTP and the web.

Today, the kernel is up to version 2.6 and Ubuntu is one of the fastest growing Linux distributions available. Ubuntu combines all the desirable features-usability, security, and support-in one distribution.

This book focuses on the Dapper Drake 6.06 LTS version of Ubuntu. Although other versions of Ubuntu have an 18-month support life, Dapper is intended to have up to five years of support from its corporate sponsor, Canonical Ltd.

Book title: Ubuntu Hacks By Bill Childers, Jonathan Oxer, Kyle Rankin

Publisher: O'Reilly

Brief Introduction

The Ubuntu distribution simplifies Linux by providing a sensible collection of applications, an easy-to-use package manager, and lots of fine-tuning, which make it possibly the best Linux for desktops and laptops. Readers of both Linux Journal and TUX Magazine confirmed this by voting Ubuntu as the best Linux distribution in each publication's 2005 Readers Choice Awards. None of that simplification, however, makes Ubuntu any less fun if you're a hacker or a power user.

Like all books in the "Hacks" series, Ubuntu Hacks includes 100 quick tips and tricks for all users of all technical levels. Beginners will appreciate the installation advice and tips on getting the most out of the free applications packaged with Ubuntu, while intermediate and advanced readers will learn the ins-and-outs of power management, wireless roaming, 3D video acceleration, server configuration, and much more.

I’ve been looking for some good reading for Ubuntu newbies. These are a great addition to my list.

Have you come across any Ubuntu e-book that come in pdf format?

    Thanks. 🙂

  3. Simon says:

It seems that, only the Official Ubuntu book is released under CC license… Meaning the others on the site are violating copyright. But as it’s a Chinese site, they probably don’t care!

  4. Alan Pope says:

I note that the official ubuntu guide is licensed under the creative commons and as such is freely redistributable, but the others on that site aren’t so freely licensed.

I wonder, is it wise and indeed morally right to publicly link to and promote a site that seems not to respect copyright and license on the work of others?

Would it not make more sense once you have bought and read the book to link to an online purchase site such as amazon where your site visitors could buy a copy and thus support those who write these fine works?

  5. admin says:

i just want to provide more information about ubuntu and these are not hosted in my site and i am just providing the location of the links so that it would be useful for more users.

can we get this fixed please?

    thanks

  12. Saif says:

All the links work fine – you are supposed to click them (as opposed to right-clicking).

  13. Samden says:

This article sounded great when I found it, but having read the comments re copyright I won´t be using these books. Writers need a return for their work. If someone puts loads of work into a book only to have it copied and used without their permission, this will just discourage them from writing an updated edition later. I know you are trying to help people access documentation, but this will actually cause less documentation to be available in future.

For any reader interested in info on Ubuntu, there are plenty of books available for purchase if you do a search, and the official free Ubuntu documentation is here:
