For those completely new to Ubuntu , download the file and double-click on it, then extract the .ppd file to a convenient location. Then go to System->Administration->Printing, Double-click on ‘Add new printer', then follow instructions, when asked for printer model, click on ‘install driver' and open your ppd file, then follow instructions again.

hi what other printers will work with the linux ubuntu based computer?
hi, I have a hp printer LaserJet 1018 and just find the way to install the driver in Ubuntu. You can find it in my blog: http://danielsblog.typepad.com/blog/2010/06/install-hp-laserjet-1018-usb-in-ubuntu.html
Hope this can help anyone who needs it =)
Although I had problems with the solution presented by Daniel, I had success with the solution at http://askubuntu.com/questions/174176/how-do-i-get-an-hp-1018-laser-printer-to-work-on-12-04
Specifically, Open the Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command:
sudo hp-setup
My symptom was that the printer was recognized by the system, but when I tried to print anything, the print job started and a “printer error: connecting-to-printer” occurred.
