Unity: a lightweight netbook interface

Unity is geared towards a ‘light' variation of Ubuntu, which concentrates on getting the user to the web as quickly as possible. We would like Unity to be the default session for Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 (Maverick) and we hope to present some ideas this week to show how we think we can make the transition to a mostly web-based session to a more fully-featured session for netbooks (including search, better file management, and easier window management).

Install Unity in Ubuntu

Open the terminal and run the following commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-dx-team/une

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install unity

Logout and then log back in selecting ‘Unity UNE Session' from your login screen.

I tried it and honestly and very disappointed. I know its still young but right now I think both ubuntu and gnome are going the wrong way with their environments. Its like everyone is going towards touchscreen interfaces, but hey, I still have a keyboard over here.

The gnome 2 I currently have beats both gnome3 and unity hands down. I don’t like having to hunt programs, let me organize things the way I want them, I don’t want to have to search for things every time I want to do something.

Very concerned with where you are headed here.

    simply put
-I have a netbook. My main concern is speed. I want a light OS
-I download ubuntu netbook remix. I wasn’t given any options on the applications / components I want. In fact, I’ll be using almost none of them.
-very limited OS. I HATE having to search for everything before I can use it. WTF?
-it is the SLOWEST OS I’ve EVER used on a netbook after a CLEAN install.
    -I’m very disappointed
-I have to resorted back to windows…
