This guide explains a very easy way to reconfigure your ZTE MF626 HSDPA modem to be plug and play in Ubuntu in just 6 simple steps.

You will need a computer with hyperterminal (included with windows XP) to send AT commands to the modem. I'm sure there is a way to do this from Ubuntu -- someone with more expertise can correct me here. For now just borrow your friend's XP netbook while he is looking the other way. Please note that Vista no longer includes hyperterminal -- see here for information on alternatives.

NameBench is a program that searches for the fastest DNS in your area. After the program is finished searching and comparing between DNS it will give you the results including the fastest and nearest DNS in your area. After that all you have to do is edit your connection settings to use the fastest DNS available. NameBench is available for Windows and Mac systems, but most importantly it is Linux compatible.

If you're like me you have an iPhone and a portable computer running Ubuntu and you would like to have mobile internet without paying for an extra data plan from your carrier. Thanks to a few devoted individuals tethering the iPhone to Ubuntu is simple. The only prerequisite is that you must have an iPhone 3G or 3GS running OS 3.0 or higher. If you're running 3.0 then you can do this without jail breaking your phone by installing a modified carrier profile. However, if you're on OS 3.1+ then you will need to jail break your phone to install the modified carrier profile.
