Mate Desktop is a Gnome 2 fork. I use it on my old HP Mini 2133 due to its terrible GPU (VIA Chrome 9).

How do I completely remove Unity? I don’t want it to even appear as an option…

Thanks! I run Ubuntu 13.04 as a virtual PC – and Unity crawls – It is to do with how all the clever graphics are handled by VirtualBox – 3D acceleration is not available for my setup and even if I turn as many graphical bells-and-whistles off as practical – the VM is barely usable. Gnome2 using the no-frills option – runs as fast as the host machine desktop.
