sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnomenu
Add GnoMenu to panel
After installing GnoMenu,add-it to one of your panel. Right-click on the panel Add to Panel -> GnoMenu -> Add.
GnoMenu’s behaviour also depends on which panel you place it on.If you want more option right-click on the GnoMenu icon opens up a menu, with GnoMenu “Preferences” and “Edit Menus” items.

If I would want tracker to be the search program, what command would I have to enter in preferences?
Nice tip – thanks! Runs great on my system.
asdir – to use the “Synaptic Package Manager” tool, which is what I assume you’re trying to use, just do the following:
– In Synaptic Package Manager, go to “Settings – Repositories”
– Click the “Add” button
– Enter the string listed above (i.e. the “ppa:gnomenu-team/ppa” string) and click “Add source”
– Wait for the repository to appear
– Click “Close” to go back to the main Synaptic window
– Click “Reload” to refresh the list
– search for “gnomenu”
No, that was not my question. Thanks for caring though.
I meant the GnoMenu-Preferences. In there, you can give GnoMenu different commands which to use for different tasks. The default for the search-box is set to “gnome-search-tool”.
Since I think that this is not equivalent to the tracker search, I’d like to know which command to enter there to get tracker as the default search program.
I believe you should be able to replace gnome-search-tool with tracker-search to use tracker instead.
Yep, thanks, that was the kind of answer I was asking for. (Although the correct one would have been “tracker-search-tool”, but it pointed me in the right direction 😉 )
lol well I was close 😛 Glad you got it worked out!
I have tried it on gnome but…it works on mouse clicks only no shortcuts. Tried to configure it on Windows key but then it captures all Windows+___ shortcuts. It has a search bar but we cannot type their to find something. On Windows 7 I use start menu as a launcher like launchy, Gnomenu does not take an Enter key as search command it just writes a nonsense character in search query so you have to remove that character and click manually on search to find that application in the menue. It is fancy but buggy.
I can not see the gnomenu in my add to panel window. Where is it???
Do you know that you can use GnoMenu with AWN?
try it it’s great
I’ve been trying for hours to get GnoMenu to work with AWN with no success. I have the 64 bit version. I got GnoMenu to work on the panel, but not an AWN; it just says Whoops! The applet crashed. Has anyone else had this problem and got it to work?
Hey Geo, any luck on getting gnomenu to work? I am having the same problem.
Thanks,
Ben
I followed the installation directions from this website and GnoMenu works perfect. At first I followed the directions from the Gnome-Look website.
I installed this fine under ubuntu 10.10
However I decided to have a look at the 11.04 alpha…
When I upgraded my menu button gets cut off where it goes off the panel. i have a custom menu and the menu button goes off the panel a small bit by using 2 seperate .png pictures, but the one that shows off the panel has dissapeared.. how can i fix this?
