If you want to enable Facebook Chat for Pidgin in Ubuntu you need to install Facebook Chat for Pidgin plugin. This is a Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin and libpurple messengers. It connects to the new Facebook Chat IM service without the need for an API key.

Currently the plugin can log into the Facebook servers, grab the buddy list, send/receive messages, add/remove friends, receive notifications, search for Facebook friends and set your Facebook status.

Note:-  Now this plugin is in ubuntu repositories use the following command to install

sudo apt-get install pidgin-facebookchat

Just wanted to add this if your having problems setting this up. If you are using the “new” facebook, make when adding your facebook account (screen name is your email address) that you go to the “Advanced” tab and change “SERVER: http://www.facebook.com” to “SERVER: http://www.new.facebook.com“. I did this and now it works wonderfully.

Thanks a lot for this!! 🙂 I hate having to chat from within the facebook page – I like having my chats saved to file which it can’t do. And it was another window – thanks for the howto!

I installed the packages for Facebook Chat and Skype and neither one of them appears in the “add accounts” menu. The files exist with a chmod of 755 in /usr/lib/purple-2 and I am using Hardy Heron and pidgin 2.4.1 (can’t seem to be able to install the newest version)

Strangely, the plugin works to send messages, but all responses are sent to facebook instead of pidgin, regardless of whether I’m logged in to Facebook.

    Any ideas?

Tutorial seems very scant but does provide some details. I’ve added how to compile it from source since the svn builds do add a lot of functionality.

Thankyou, my only glitch after setting this up over 5 PCs was: on the last pc I didn’t have any accounts setup on pidgin.
So when pidgin was finally started there was no option for facebook.
quick fix after trial and error :
    open pidgin
I setup account to link with Aim(or any other IM) then shut down pidgin .

    Next I opened terminal….
became root typed in sudo -i
    prompted for password …

    next I typed in
    wget http://pidgin-facebookchat.googlecode.com/files/pidgin-facebookchat-1.38.deb

    next I typed in
    sudo dpkg -i pidgin-facebookchat-1.38.deb

    next I closed terminal

This time when I started pidgin on the pc in question the facebook option was available.

this process worked for me on a fresh (new ) install Ubuntu 8.10

    Thanks UG

This package made it to the repositories, so you can do sudo apt-get install pidgin-facebookchat to install it.

Would be nice to include this in the post..

@Stephanie I had to symlink /usr/local/lib/pidgin/libfacebook.so to the real installed location at /usr/lib/purple-2/libfacebook.so – then it showed up and worked.

I have managed to install the plugin and have created an new account for Facebook, using the email address and password I have for my Facebook account. I left local alias blank, server is set to new.facebook.com and proxy type is set to “Use GNOME Proxy Settings.”

Yet this doesn’t work for me. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Note, you no longer need a plugin to chat with your Facebook friends through Pidgin, as Facebook now uses XMPP.
