Firefox (formerly known as Phoenix and Firebird) is a redesign of the Mozilla browser component. It is similar to Galeon, K-Meleon, and Chimera, but it is written using the XUL user interface language and was designed to be cross-platform.
What is new on firefox 8
The latest version of Firefox has the following changes:
Add-ons installed by third party programs are now disabled by default
Added a one-time add-on selection dialog to manage previously installed add-ons
Added Twitter to the search bar for select locales. Additional locale support will be added in the future
Added a preference to load tabs on demand, improving start-up time when windows are restored
Improved performance and memory handling when using
Install firefox 8 on ubuntu
Open the terminal and run the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox language-pack-en language-pack-en-base

yeah.. didn’t quite work for me either. using 10.10. I did get it to work.. by another terminal code.. looking for that now.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next
then in terminal
sudo apt-get update
Then in terminal
sudo apt-get upgrade
I redid the sudo apt-get update and then again the upgrade.. and it just worked all the sudden.
I , also , had the ppa already added as the above post suggested.
but it didn’t work before I did what is in this post. let me know if that one worked for you too.

I am running ubuntu 11.10 on my net-book, as well as a classic 10.10 version. your updated commands worked for me to upgrade firefox, but I was wondering if there is a terminal command for removing a repository, or is there only a way to add it?? Although I realize that I could probably craft a script to edit the /etc/sources.list. I from am going to try to research it 2. g2g FF is prompting a restart to the updated version.

When a PPA is added to the system a file is created under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/repositoryname.list To remove a repository just use “sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/repositoryname.list” If you type out the command up to the repository name and use press tab twice you will see a list of all ppa’s installed. Makes it easier to know the name of what you need to remove. Hope that helps.

i would think there would be a channel log that will see if as there and not be a problem.. but make no mistake.. I am far from a Guru in this place.
i wish Greg the original ” doesn’t work guy’ above would come back and try my suggestion.

The security repo has FF8 in it. I checked my version, even went to the Launchpad site and confirmed it. See my post below.
Speculation: The Ubuntu Mozilla team is now using the security ppa for updates. Whatever. For Oneric:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox language-pack-en language-pack-en-base
(although if you have FF installed, it should update when you do sudo apt-get update).

My Ubuntu was giving me errors because I couldn’t figure out right away how to disable repositories that had been used added by apt-add-repository…..
I figured out that if you just delete the file in the directory:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
If you want to undo a repository added by apt-add-repositry just delete the unwanted file name, that is causeing the problem with your updates.
I deleted the above file, and my update manager; stopped complaining about updates.

The security ppa didn’t give me an update for Lucid, but the firefox-next ppa did, although Firefox now mentions I’m currently using the “beta update channel” when I go to About Firefox.

Christopher, I have had the stable repo enabled for a long long time on my 10.04 computer, and have been patiently waiting for it to indicate an update to Firefox 8. It never did. That’s what I first posted (see the post from Greg dated November 15, 2011 at 1:23 am).
I understand the frustration – this repo worked just fine in the past. I’m not sure what changed. Maybe they just haven’t pushed out FF8 into that repo yet.

Unfortunately, the Firefox Stable PPA for 10.04 and 10.10 has a “Publishing has been disabled for this archive” message.

OK, my bad. Apparently, FF updated thru the Mozilla Security repo. (Sorry, I use Chrome as my regular browser.) So if you are using Oneric, use “sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa”
And @mancake: The Mozilla Ubuntu team is usually right on top of these things. They are really very good.

How sad!! it’s been version 8, but application self-updating function on linux platform has not been implemented yet! Those applications on linux are merely just toys, even a major software like firefox…

It’s not that the self-updating function has not been implemented : it has been removed on purpose. That’s not the way applications should be updated on linux. The correct way is to use the repositories. Even if it means you sometimes have to wait for a few days before the new version is released…
