How to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix in Ubuntu 8.10/8.04

The Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface is designed to make Ubuntu Linux easy to use on mini-laptops with small, low resolution displays. It comes with a custom program launcher that replaces the normal Ubuntu desktop and panels with a series of tabs and program shortcuts.Netbook Remix is not another edition of Ubuntu, like Kubuntu, or Edubuntu, but rather a collection of seven packages that are installed on top of a standard Ubuntu image. These packages are available for both Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10
For Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) users
Edit your sources.list file using the following command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Now add these two lines to the end of your source list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu intrepid main
Save and exit the file.
Update the sourcelist using the following command
sudo apt-get update
Install the Netbook Remix packages
sudo apt-get install go-home-applet human-netbook-theme maximus netbook-launcher window-picker-applet
For Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) users
Edit your sources.list file using the following command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Now add these two lines to the end of your source list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main
Save and exit the file.
Update the sourcelist using the following command
sudo apt-get update
Now Install the Netbook Remix packages
sudo apt-get install go-home-applet human-netbook-theme maximus ume-launcher window-picker-applet
To Start Ubuntu Netbook Remix Simply reboot your machine
Configuring Netbook Remix
For Netbook Remix to work you need to set maximus and ume-launcher (For 8.04 users) or netbook-launcher (For 8.10 Users) to your startup programs. Go to System>Preferences>Sessions and add entries for both of these commands.
Switch between desktop options
If you want to switch between default desktop and Netbook Remix you need to install Desktop-Switcher utility using the following command
sudo apt-get install Desktop-Switcher
The desktop switcher will show up in your System Preferences menu, and it will let you toggle between the ubuntu netbook remix desktop mode or a classic desktop with the click of a button.
I have had a lot of problem with Remix on MSI Wind. It is much easier to install Easy Peasy from the scratch. No bugs at all, just the usual 8.10 related ones.
desktop switcher not found and not installed. how do i fix this ?
@Dzappa – the package is desktop-switcher not Desktop-Switcher, that should help
@Andy – thank you – now it works (more or less)
I used all the instructions correctly and ended up with a white screen being unable to do anything with my screen.
Hi, I installed the Netbook Remix on Hardy Heron, it works just fine. However, when switching back and forth, I only have the “Default Ubuntu Desktop” option, and it takes me back to the default, but not to my customised desktop (launchers and so forth) – do you happen to know a workaround for this? I would like to get my old desktop back, when switching, if possible. Thanks!
The funny part is that while on Netbook Remix, I still have the previous, customised top and bottom panels, and switching back to the default does just that – switches to the out-of-the-box Hardy default desktop. Any suggestions on how to fix this are welcome, thanks 🙂
I just downloaded the ubuntu remix on my acer netbook and my internal mouse is not working i have to use an external mouse how can i fix this problem
Can we get an update for this for Ubuntu 10.04 Please.
Thanks in advance,
joe
I agree – any chance of seeing instructions for adding Ubuntu Netbook Remix on top of an existing 10.10 desktop edition?
