Install Skype Instant messanger

Posted by admin on January 7th, 2007 Email This Post Email This Post

Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world. And even though the calls are free, they are really excellent quality. If you and your friends, family or business contacts are using webcams, you can also make free video calls. You can even call landlines and mobile phones at really cheap per minute rates (and there’s no setup or subscription fee).

Install skype in ubuntu

First you need to download the latest .deb package from here using the following command

wget http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-deb

Now you have skype_debian-1.3.0.53-1_i386.deb package if you want to install this package use the following command

sudo dpkg -i skype_debian-1.3.0.53-1_i386.deb

This will complete the installation. Now if you want to open skype go to Applications->Internet->Skype

Note that Skype for Linux currently does not support any cool Skype features such as video calls, Skype SMS nor and have poor support for Skype Voice-mail.

Nice guide, by the way. :)
