Install unity in ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)
Unity is the default UI for Ubuntu Netbook Edition. The easiest way to test it is to install the Netbook Edition of the 10.10
with a standard ubuntu-desktop edition
1. Run just sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook
2. This will add in GDM a "Ubuntu Netbook Edition" menu option when you click on your username. Select it and login to get the Unity interface.
Install unity in ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid)
Unity is primarily built for maverick (10.10), but we are conscious that some people want to test it on lucid. For those, we have setup a PPA and backport unity component to lucid.
If you are on Lucid, load a terminal and run the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-dx-team/une
sudo apt-get update.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-settings
Logout and choose in GDM your "Ubuntu Unity Netbook Edition" menu option when you click on your username.

As usual, stupid. Not ready-to-run. Windows7, on the other hand, seems to at least work, despite it’s authorship.
Wow,John. You realize that this is a development snapshot, right?
Wow John, just so I am clear on what you are saying, you just stated tat it is a bad thing that an alpha build component of an OS, not due to be released until October, is not as good as an operating system that was released LAST October. Yes John, that is usual to send out pre-release software for testing before the final product ships. Even MS does that.

I installed Unity on my MSI Wind U100 Netbook.
Now I can’t login.
When I enter my password, the screen starts flashing between all white and my desktop background.
Harry, I don’t know the reason for that behavior, but you can log into a normal Ubuntu session this way:
1) Click on your name on the login screen but don’t enter a password yet.
2) Got to the bottom of the screen and change the “Unity field to “GNOME.”
3) Enter your password and login.
Im just getting my ordinary desktop minus nautilus.
It breaks a lot of gnome applications
yes…its an Alpha release. The entire point of its release is to identify bugs. Posting them here probably won’t help them fix it.

I got a flashing/blinking desktop background using Unity after upgrading to the latest beta (Maverick). I’m surprised to see a bug of this proportion this close to the final release.
I’m using Ubuntu on regular basis (use Windows only to watch HD films or use software that I need for my work and is not available (or simply can’t run under Wine) for Linux. One of the things I REALLY dislike about Ubuntu’s policy (let’s call it like this) is “new version HAS to bring new stuff in”. I understand if I have Linux just for fun and to experiment with. But since I use this every single day I find it frustrating that the huge dev-team behind Ubuntu neglects stability in order to offer new stuff. New isn’t equal to good. New release means improvements but also many many known and unknown bugs. In order to create a really stable environment and give the people the feeling that they are using a great product (and show Billy-Boy the finger for that), things have to be tested. Look how long it took for GRUB to evolve in it’s next version. But, hell, I’ve never had any problems with it! What I see in Unity is a great and enjoyable improvement but also a broken toy that will be send to the “store” before it’s fixed. Pitty, for broken things give wrong impression to the people, who think that it’s meant to work like this (this is about all novice users) and say “This is sh*t! I can’t believe they offered me something like this!”.
This is of course only my two cents. Don’t want to anger or abuse anyone. Just hope that things change and get polished before release.

I just installed 10.10 netbook edition on my HP laptop and it blinks whenever I even move the cursor. Completely unusable. How can anyone release software in this condition?
I’ve also installed Netbook edition 10.10 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop, sometimes it hangs up for no reason, but only here my RTL8187se wi-fi card works on WinXP drivers through ndiswrapper
I’m missing that “Start menu” in Desktop edition, but Unity is very usefull too
The only question is: what is the terminal command to switch between workspaces? I want to make a special key binding on Mod4 (aka Windows key), in fact i can set every program on it except this button
The Flashing and other abnormal graphics failures are because Unity requires a 3D Graphics card
