Before doing any changes you need to take backup of existing files
Now you need to download the following files in /etc/acpi/ directory
Download video_brightnessup.sh from here
Download video_brightnessdown.sh from here
After replacing these scripts
No reboot or logout required, simply press your function combination on your laptop to change brightness. Try to press FN + Up/Down Arrow.

@John:
I am using Linux Mint too (version 11) and the same problem here. To resolve the problem try the following.
You will need to add this to your xorg.conf:
Section “Device”
Identifier “Default Device”
#Next line is essential to have a working brightness function
Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1″
Driver “nvidia”
EndSection

Hi
It is gr8 and very easy solution. It works fine for me for my laptop HP Compaq nx6110 (Ubuntu 11.04).
Login with root user and copy both the files at /etc/acpi/ folder.. thats all.
Thanks a lot.
