If you want to change the background color of your screen follow any one of the options

Option 1

First you need to edit the gdm.conf file using the following command

sudo vi /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

you can use gedit also

scroll to where it says BackgroundColor=#123123

replace with your color (or just #000000 for black)

save and exit the file

Option2

A user friendly way is to go System->Administration->Login Window

Once it opens you should see similar to the following screen

Select Local tab and click on next to background colour button

Once it opens you can select your background colour option and click on ok
