A week after the NVIDIA Linux engineering team released the 190.42 driver release candidate, this driver is now deemed stable and has been officially released on NVIDIA's web-site. The NVIDIA 190.42 driver is the first official release in the 190.xx Linux driver series, which has been in beta for a number of months and undergone numerous releases.
Compared to the NVIDIA 185.xx driver series, the NVIDIA 190.42 driver brings new hardware support, support for OpenGL 3.2, many VDPAU video playback improvements, initial support for X Server 1.7 / X.Org 7.5, support for configuring the NVIDIA GPU's fan-speed, and support for configuring the GPU PowerMizer mode. There are also various bug-fixes and other smaller improvements. Among the newly supported hardware is the GeForce GT 220, GeForce G102M, GeForce G210, GeForce G210M, GeForce GT 230M, GeForce GT 240M, GeForce GTS 250M, and GeForce GTS 260M.

The NVIDIA 190.42 driver, however, does not contain the OpenCL support that is found in this driver set, but we anticipate the Open Computing Language library to be merged into the mainline package soon.

The official NVIDIA 190.42 display driver is available for 64-bit Linux and 32-bit Linux. The FreeBSD and Solaris NVIDIA drivers have also reached version 190.42 with similar changes.

  1. admin says:

    @Samanta

Which ubuntu version you are using

  2. Flying says:

The PPA source doesn’t seem working. Whenever I tried to install nvidia-glx-190, it complained:
    =====snip======
    nvidia-glx-190:
Depends: nvidia-190-libvdpau but it is not going to be installed
    =====snip======

When I then try to select nvidia-190-libvdpau, its dependency require me to remove a bunch of useful packages I use, such as k3b, kdbbase-runtime, libxine1, etc.

    My system is Karmic x86_64:
    2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  3. chuicjak says:

    is it suitable for gtx275?

  4. Brandon says:

There was an issue regarding Karmic’s libxine being dynamically linked to the 185 driver. KDE uses xine for media playback, so unlike Gnome, it needs xine. However, the xine-vdpau in the PPA is linked to the 190 driver so that issue is resolved.

Also, changes to the driver packaging required backporting the Karmic DKMS to previous distros.

  5. MyName says:

Got a 8600 GTS, and I had to add the line:
Option “NoPowerConnectorCheck” in Screen section of xorg.conf.

    Now Karmic rules!!! 🙂

  6. brad says:

…. this info allowed me to fix a borked jaunty “dist-upgrade” to karmic. NVIDIA driver was not retained after upgrade. had to apt-get purge and reinstall xorg and xubuntu desktop to get login screen up then used this page to install nvidia drivers.

thanks guys…. (and thanks for nothing karmic koala)

  7. Andre says:

Just got a G210 for my new HTPC, lets give it a try!

  8. Tim says:

I am not able to download the key from either the keyserver or from the link that was given.

  9. gigaman says:

whenever I install the 190.42 driver in Jaunty, it will open a menu saying I have no graphics kernel (or something) on reboot and asking me to create a new one. When I go to the X server setting, it will say I would have to restart the Xserver. I however can not do this because the menu of alt+ctrl+f1 demands me “login” and “password” which is not the one I use as a user (is it not able to get the special characters in my password?). Is there a way to get the nvidia 190.42 driver to the proprietary graphics drivers list (system-administration-hardware drivers)so I can install it from the menu instead of the recommended 96-version. Please help!

  10. dekdence says:

A new version was released. Can you please make a tutorial on how to install??

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_190.53.html

  11. Brandon says:

gigaman, if the recommended driver is the 96, then the newer drivers will not work on your card, which explains why the X server won’t start. If you can’t update the graphics card you’ll need a new system. However, I’d update to the xorg-edgers ppa and use the Nouveau driver.

dekadence, the 190.53 is in the same ppa and has replaced the .42 driver.

  12. dekdence says:

    Yeah.I noticed.Thanks

  13. lordbah says:

I can’t activate this from Hardware Drivers. “installArchives() failed”. This is after Update Manager could only do a Partial Upgrade, but after that completed it found nothing else to do. Things got messed up somehow.

  14. Bud says:

I have upgraded to Ubuntu 910 from Ubunto 904 and the NVIDIA drivers stopped working.

Now when I try to run
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa
    I get an error message:

The password and internet connection is fine.
    Thanx.
    Bud

  15. Martin West says:

Thanks, worked fine apart from nvidia-settings-190 was not found, so I just removed and then it ran fine.

What a disaster karmic is. After upgrading today x failed to start and in the log was
Feb 6 10:02:33 lenovo3 kernel: [ 39.851476] NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 190.53, but
Feb 6 10:02:33 lenovo3 kernel: [ 39.851478] NVRM: this kernel module has the version 185.18.36. Please
but the odd thing was dpkg didnt show any 190 nvidia packges installed.

followed your instructions and back in business again, thanks again.

  16. Lisa says:

Confirming having to remove the nvidia-settings-190 on Jaunty as well. Works fine apart from that.

  17. kenjiru says:

    I can’t get it installed:
