I feel like the old bait-and switch. I ran my laptop on the Alpha which worked great before I upgraded my other computers to the beta, which ran great for a month. The changes since 10.04 went final have all been horrible. All the machines are running 9.10 or will be soon.

In doing upgrades recently, I have discovered machines with Intel video cards that lock up or loose video soon after starting. Here is my report card for Plymouth and the x drivers in Ubuntu.

    1. ATI great
    2. Nvidia ok if you stick with the built in driver.
    3. Nvidia SUCKS if you go to the binary driver. The screen is black through the entire boot process.
    4. Intel SUCKS, again black screens or unstable systems that often don’t boot.
    5. Any-other-Video-Card ok, but results vary.

At this point it seems that Plymoth works properly less that 40% of the time, GDM 2 is ugly as sin. Ubuntu would have been better off sticking with the old boot system, GDM 1 with pretty graphics and jaunty style intel drivers. Let Fedora work out the bugs for another year.

Now lets discuss the reality. If there is soon a Point release on updateded intel or plymouth or GDM drivers, we will get them in Lucid. If they are more radical than point releases Lucid will never get them. So just like Hardy got Firefox 2.x when Firefox 3.0 came out a month later, and Hardy users never got Firefox 3 in the repos, EVEN AFTER MOZILLA STOPED SUPPORTING VERSION 2. I am afraid that Lucid users will always be stuck with broken Intel Drivers, ugly GDM 2.0 and a Plymouth that does not work quite right.

I totally agree 100% same thing happens with HP ze4600, HP ze4900 MSI 2 core intel laptop, and 2 desktops with Biostar p4m80 MB. I don’t think this is a one of a kind incident. Intel Chipsets, Via Chipsets, Nvidia after upgrading to the new drivers just like he said. I installed at least 4 times on each machine with all the same related problems as described above. I installed 9.10 and everything works like it should on all machines. I noticed this happened right after the updates through the update manager. Why does it download Nvidia drivers when the machine does not have a Nvidia card?

I agree. I think the development community were blindly in love with the idea of a 10-second boot, and they ignored everything else.

Does anyone know when Ubuntu 10.10 (MeerKat) will be out? They say the updates will be mainly on hybrid cloud computing. I’m wondering whether I should download the BETA now or wait for the actual release. Thanks!
