Upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Beta

Note: This is still a beta release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in 30th October 2008.
Important Notes Before Upgrade
- Take a complete Back up all your data. There is no guarantee that all will go well.
- Remember that this software is still beta at this time. It is not for production machines.
- Be sure that you have all updates applied to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS before you upgrade
Procedure to follow
To upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04, press Alt+F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box.
Starting Update Manager in Progress
Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘8.10′ is available. Click Upgrade
This will show you Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Release notes click on upgrade
If you are using any third party sources in your /etc/apt/sources.list file it will be disabled at the time of upgrade process click close
Setting new software channels in progress
Starting the upgrade process window click on Start Upgrade
Downloading the new Packages in Progress
Installing Packages in Progress
Installing Packages in Progress in Terminal
Remove obsolete packages window click on remove
Cleaning Up process in Progress
You need to restart the system to complete the Upgrade by clicking “Restart Now”
Testing Your Upgrade
You can check the ubuntu version installed using the following command
sudo lsb_release -a

Just a heads up for people with ATI: there aren’t any fglrx drivers yet for 8.10, so you will
have to switch to the 2d driver, or wait until it is supported.

This release rocks! My aging compaq Presario X1000 laptop wasn’t doing well with Hardy 8.04…
My ATI mobility 9200 with 32 MB or ram wasn’t supported well, I had to fiddle around to get 3d back, couldn’t really get compiz-fusion to work either. Same thing for the wireless card management with WPA password protected routers in one location and switching to something else at work…. often requiring retyping everything in the network setup boxes…..
It made me regret upgrading from Gutsy…..
Now with Intrepid, those problems are gone….. I have full video card support back. 2d-3d accelaration on my system. Even VGA out to a external monitor/projector works well. Compiz is humming along with all effects working. Wireless management works. My intel pentium M 1.6 Ghz with 512 MB of ram is actually feeling faster on Ibex than on Hardy!!!!!

You say that you should back up your data, and of course it’s a good idea, but my system is running Ubuntu’s software RAID that I set up during the install of Hardy. Do you happen to know how this upgrade will treat those drives/that data?

It only upgraded 4 packages then didn’t install correctly. Is there anything I need to do differently for xubuntu.

Yep, a new theme was promised. Actually already the Hardy release was going to get a new theme, but it was postponed to Intrepid. Is it still not finished?
Anyway, I’m one of those people who happen to like the old theme very much too (except for the default wallpapers that tend to look a bit too brown and dull). Orange and beige look warmer and friendlier to me than gray and blue, the latter combination makes me only depressed.

The new theme is in there, its called Ubuntu-New, its all dark like. Rather nice I think.

I upgraded to the beta version as per the instructions. It seemed to be working fine a couple of days. But when I turned on the ubuntu this morning it took my name,password after which it is blank screen. What should I do?

C.P. try ctl-alt-f2 and see if it gives you a command prompt… if so try startx and see what the response is… with luck your desktop will appear… if not it may show errors to correct

ctrl-alt-f2 brings you to a shell. The correct keypress is alt-f2.
If you accidentally press ctrl-alt-f2 you need to press ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to your xwindows desktop

ctrl-alt-f2 brings you to a shell. The correct keypress is alt-f2. No Dave Tap was right for that user’s problem, for the record, but either way, you are right about getting back if you use that command.

I would like to up-grade my ubuntu 804 to 810, approximately how long could the whole process take? Not as long as downloading the 810 iso?

How long?
It would depend on your system speed, (how old/new it is) and you internet speed……..
Because when I upgraded mine from 8.04 to 8.10 it downloaded more than 400 MB of packages….. if I recall properly….. My download top out around 700 kb/s…..
It’s almost the same thing…..

Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/lib/gdm but is not owned by user 105 and group 113. Please correct the ownership or GDM configuration and restart GDM.
found out the solution by following the link post - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=368168, by removing the splash thingy wherever it occurred, now my splash screen is stripped - curtain is removed - otherwise i get login screen ok - but i’m dead scared to do change of ownership commandlines as i dread blue screen of halt. but i’ll try that and enable splash but before that any expert ideas?
