With faster decoding on multi-core, GPU, and mobile hardware and the ability to open more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs, 2.0 is a major upgrade for VLC.
Twoflower has a new rendering pipeline for video, with higher quality subtitles, and new video filters to enhance your videos.
It supports many new devices and BluRay Discs (experimental).
Completely reworked Mac and Web interfaces and improvements in the other interfaces make VLC easier than ever to use.

Install vlc 2.0 in ubuntu
Open the terminal and run the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc
This works only in 11.10. In lucyd it installs 1.3
in ubuntu 10.04 LTS use:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc2
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc
in my case it intalls version 1.1.13 not 2.0
I did the same steps you wrote
Yes, it only works for 11.10 or later, I guess you could download the tar file and install from that, but I will just wait until it hits the repositories, or until I upgrade.
there is some tar.xz – now to open it? http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-sources.html
This is true. This procedure reinstalls 1.1.14 in Ubuntu 10.10. Come on guys. You can do better than that.
Its not compatible with kernel 3.0.0-16-generic yet
This fails on Ubuntu 10.10.
